Academy sports recap: Lacrosse coach selected to hall of fame Published May 16, 2005 SAN ANTONIO (AFPN) -- Fred Acee, head coach of the academy lacrosse team was selected for induction into the National Junior College Athletic Association Hall of Fame. Before coming to the academy in 1998, he spent 30 years as head coach of the Farmingdale State University of New York team, building them into a national lacrosse powerhouse. Under his guidance, Farmingdale advanced to the NJCAA Final Four an amazing 25 times. The NJCAA Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association will induct Acee and Mike Candel, of Nassau Community College, into the Association's Hall of Fame on May 13 as part of the NJCAA Men's Lacrosse Invitational Championship banquet in Baltimore. Acee and Candel are the first two inductees in the newly formed NJCAA Lacrosse Hall of Fame.In other lacrosse news, three Air Force players were named to the All-Great Western Lacrosse League team May 12. Justin Pavoni, Will Meister and Justin Kuchta were named first-team selections. Pavoni also was named goalkeeper of the year for the conference.The Air Force track and field team swept the Mountain West Conference’s weekly awards. Paul Gensic and Olivia Korte were named the Mountain West Conference Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the conference office announced May 10. Gensic, a pole vaulter, claimed honor after clearing a meet-winning 17-11 at the Ris Westen-Air Force Twilight Invitational. That is the fourth-best vault in the nation this year and the second best in the region. Korte picked up her honor after breaking her own academy record in the discus throw to win the event at the team’s annual evening meet. With a distance of 170-6, Korte’s throw ranks fifth on the conference’s all-time list and 23rd nationally.In other track and field news, the Falcons wrapped up competition at the 2005 Mountain West Conference Track and Field Championships May 14 with eight all-conference finishes. Travis Picou was named the Male Freshman of the Year, while Dierra Poland was honored by the conference as the winner of the Sportsmanship Award.In baseball action, the academy team took two of three games from the University of Utah, improving their record to 8-40 on the season and 3-24 in conference play. In the first game, played May 13, the Falcons scored four runs in the top of the ninth to come from behind to defeat the Utes 6-4. On May 14, Air Force batters out-hit the Utes 15-9 to take a 13-3 victory. In the final game of the series, played May 15, Utah batters scored 13 runs in the first three innings and then held off a late Falcon rally to win 14-8.
