The general court-martial of Cadet 3rd Class Douglas Meester ended June 8 with a guilty plea to three charges, and a sentence of a reprimand and fine of $2,000.

Original charges were preferred against Cadet Meester on May 13, 2003, for violations of the Uniformed Code of Military Justice. The original charges were rape, forcible sodomy, conduct unbecoming an officer and indecent assault. If convicted, Cadet Meester faced a maximum punishment of confinement for life, dismissal from the Air Force and forfeiture of all pay and allowances.

As the result of a pretrial agreement finalized June 7, the original charges against Cadet Meester were dismissed, in return for a guilty plea on three charges. The new charges which the cadet pleaded guilty to were dereliction of duty, conduct unbecoming an officer and indecent acts.

“Our goal was to see that justice was served for both the victim and the accused, and our military justice system worked. We are satisfied with the judge's ruling," said Maj. Erica Austin, academy legal spokeswoman.

Following his guilty plea and sentencing, Cadet Meester remains a cadet at the academy.
