12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year
Staff Sgt. Geoffrey M. Welsh is a security forces military working dog handler assigned to the 4th Security Forces Squadron at Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C. He has been selected as one of the 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year. While deployed to Iraq, he played a critical role in K-9 improvised explosive device detection on more than 100 combat missions. He engaged in a 45-minute firefight against enemy combatants and saved the life of his platoon sergeant who was hit by sniper fire. In addition, his entry point searches led to the confiscation of 250 cell phones, more than 1,000 media storage devices, 20 digital cameras and a base map, ensuring the security of the installation and keeping people safe.
