Retired Col. Gail Halvorsen
Retired Col. Gail Halvorsen returned to the former Ramey Air Force Base for the first time since 1949 March 22 at what is now Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen, Puerto Rico. Colonel Halvorsen, also known as the Berlin Candy Bomber, flew C-54 Skymasters during the Berlin Airlift and parachuted candy to children from his airplane. The colonel signed autographs and showed children how he tied candy to parachutes made from handkerchiefs during the air station's open house. Approximately 500 people from local schools, family members and members of the Ramey AFB Historical Association got a firsthand look at military equipment including a C-54.
