Air Force Escape and Evasion Society

WASHINGTON -- An Air Forces Escape and Evasion Society member explains the significance of the winged boot emblem on his hat during a visit to the newly opened World War II Memorial here May 3. He said the winged boot signified that he had walked to freedom while evading enemy capture after he was shot down in World War II. The society comprises both U.S. Airmen who successfully evaded capture after bailing out of their aircraft over Europe in World War II and a number of the European civilians who helped them.
