BRIGADIER GENERAL JOHN R. HULLENDER Brigadier General John R. Hullender is assistant to the director, Institute for National and Strategic Studies for Joint Operational Studies, National Defense University, Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C. General Hullender was born in 1937, in Ringgold, Ga., where he graduated from Ringgold High School in 1955. He received a bachelor of science degree in business management in 1973 and a master of business administration degree in 1974, both from Auburn University. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1966, Air Command and Staff College in 1970, Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1975, Air War College in 1978 and the National War College in 1980. The general entered the Air Force in August 1959 through the Aviation Cadet Program. After brief orientation training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, he was assigned to navigator training school at Harlingen Air Force Base, Texas, and received his commission and navigator wings in August 1960. From September 1960 to February 1961 he attended the Electronic Warfare Officer Course at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. He then was assigned to Homestead Air Force Base, Fla., as a B-52 electronic warfare officer with the 19th Bombardment Wing, until January 1965. In February 1966 he graduated from undergraduate pilot training at Moody Air Force Base, Ga. He remained at Moody as an instructor pilot, check pilot and flight evaluator until August 1969, when he attended Air Command and Staff College. After F-4 fighter training at George Air Force Base, Calif., General Hullender was assigned to the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, where he flew 221 combat missions between April 1971 and May 1972. He then was assigned to the faculty of the Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., as chief of the Operations Division. General Hullender was assigned to the 82nd Flying Training Wing, Williams Air Force Base, Ariz., from December 1975 to August 1979. He served first as the T-37 operations officer with the 96th Flying Training Squadron, then as commander of the 97th Flying Training Squadron, and later as wing executive officer. After graduation from the National War College in July 1980, the general was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., as chief of the Program Requirements Group, Force Programs Division, Directorate of Personnel Programs, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Manpower and Personnel. In August 1982 he transferred to Reese Air Force Base, Texas, where he served as commander of the 64th Air Base Group. He became commander of the 64th Flying Training Wing in November 1983. In August 1985 General Hullender was assigned to Headquarters Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, as deputy chief of staff for plans. He was named deputy chief of staff for operations in July 1986. The general returned to Washington, D.C., in January 1987 and was assigned to the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as deputy director for operations, J-3, National Military Command Center. In February 1988 he became deputy director of legislative liaison, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. He assumed his present position in January 1989. General Hullender is triple rated as a command pilot, navigator and electronic warfare officer and has more than 6,000 flying hours. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, and Air Medal with 12 oak leaf clusters. He was promoted to brigadier general Aug. 1, 1986, with same date of rank. (Current as of January 1989)
