Operating within the Secretariat of the Air Force, SAF/CN oversees the Air Force's information technology, cybersecurity, and data initiatives. The primary goal of the Department of the Air Force (DAF) CIO's public strategy is to accelerate the delivery of a digital-age combat force by operationalizing data, AI, and resilient networking as core warfighting capabilities.

The office of the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) enables the U.S. Air Force core missions by ensuring the cybersecurity and resiliency of systems, information and staff.

About CISO

Mission
To assure the effectiveness of the U.S. Air Force’s five core missions by increasing the cybersecurity and resiliency of systems and information.

Vision
To facilitate risk management decisions within the cyber domain, across the five core missions of the Air Force, by:

• Creating policy for enterprise cybersecurity risk management
• Overseeing the implementation of cybersecurity controls
• Enforcing compliance of US, DoW, and Air Force policies
• Advocating cybersecurity issues within the Air Force corporate process

The office of the CISO (CNZ) is comprised of three divisions: Compliance (CNZA), Cybersecurity Programs and Protect Portfolio (CNZP), and Cybersecurity Risk Management (CNZR).

Beginning in 2019, the Department of the Air Force implemented IT services at 9 Air Force installations during what is known as the Risk Reduction Effort (RRE) to gather lessons learned to prepare for IT implementation across the DAF. RRE bases include:

• Buckley SFB, Colorado
• Cannon AFB, New Mexico
• Maxwell AFB-Gunter Annex, Alabama
• Offutt AFB, Nebraska
• Hurlburt Field, Florida
• Pope Field, North Carolina
• Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska
• Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany

Wave One was implemented at RRE bases first and is now being implemented across the DAF in a phased approach starting during calendar year 2024. Wave One includes diverse and integrated end-user devices and advanced data protection. All services are Non-Secure Internet Protocol (NIPR) supported and have begun to integrate with Secret Internet Protocol Router (SIPR).

Base Infrastructure Modernization (BIM) is an EITaaS program (formerly known as Wave 2) that seeks to overhaul and modernize the existing DAF base area network infrastructure.

Enterprise Information Technology as a Service (EITaaS) is a Department of the Air Force (DAF) initiative to leverage commercial business services and best practices to provide standardized, innovative, and agile IT service across the enterprise and allow Airmen and Guardians to focus their time and efforts on mission-critical work.

The Department of the Air (DAF) Force Chief Data Office was established in July 2017 with the goal of strengthening and modernizing the Department's data strategy and capabilities. In 2021, artificial intelligence (AI) was added to the portfolio, thus establishing the Chief Data and AI Office (DAF CDAO). The DAF and the Secretary of the Air Force have prioritized AI, recognizing the critical role it will play in the future of the military - from enhancing decision-making processes to streamlining operations. By integrating AI, our team ensures responsible implementation and effective utilization of these technologies to support the Department's mission and operations.

FY 2026 Goals

Strategy
Produce and publish implementation plans for department-wide Data and AI strategies.

Policy
Produce and release updates to DAFI Data and AI policies, including enterprise data management, AI and RAI, Data Sharing, and Stewardship.

Governance
Release new charter identifying stakeholders establish delegated responsibility for defined data domains including roles and responsibilities, provide oversight to prioritization of resources, and ensure compliance and accountability to statutory requirements.

Architecture
Deliver an integrated Data Mesh and Data Services Environment including an API gateway, metadata standards, and data catalogue.

• Codify Envision as a program of record, resolving FY27 funding and securing funding for FYDP28-32

Advocacy
Elevate the voices and projects within the DAF that are developing and delivering cutting-edge solutions using AI, prioritize enterprise level advocacy and resourcing through the CfE to reduce barriers to AI.

• Establish full reporting capability in Clara across NIPR and SIPR
• Host DAF AI Summit

Workforce Preparedness
Codify bounds and responsibilities for workforce preparedness while aiming to develop a data- and AI-ready workforce through training, upskilling, and applied use cases, and emerging AI policy mandates.
