MAJOR GENERAL DONALD A. LOGEAIS Major General Donald A. Logeais (pronounced Low JAY') is commander of the Military Airlift Command's 21st Air Force, with headquarters at McGuire Air Force Base, N.J. The 21st Air Force area of responsibility extends eastward through Canada, Greenland, Iceland, NATO Europe, Africa and the Middle East to the eastern boundaries of Iran and the Arabian peninsula. Southward, the 21st area of responsibility includes the Caribbean and South America. Within this region, more than 34,000 Military Airlift Command people and 280 airlift aircraft operate from more than 50 locations. General Logeais was born in 1935, in Kimball, Minn., and graduated from Eden Valley (Minn.) High School in 1953. He earned a bachelor of science degree in botany from St. Thomas College in 1957 and a master of science degree in international affairs from The George Washington University in 1977. He completed National War College in 1977. In June 1957 the general received his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at St. Thomas College. He then completed pilot training at Laredo Air Force Base, Texas, and was awarded his wings in January 1959. After completing helicopter training at Stead Air Force Base, Nev., the general was assigned to the 22nd Helicopter Squadron, Goose Air Base, Labrador, where he flew H-21s. He transferred to Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., in June 1960, flying C-124s for the 17th Air Transport Squadron. After transition training in C-141s in 1967, General Logeais flew with the 76th Military Airlift Squadron, also at Charleston. From June 1968 to June 1972 he was assigned to Headquarters Military Airlift Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill., where he served as executive officer to the deputy chief of staff for operations. He then was named chief of the 616th Military Airlift Squadron command post at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, a position held until the end of U.S. military involvement in March 1973. Returning to Scott, he again served as executive officer to Military Airlift Command's deputy chief of staff for operations. In June 1974 he moved to McGuire Air Force Base as commander of the 438th Organizational Maintenance Squadron. He took command of the 18th Military Airlift Squadron there in February 1976. After graduating from National War College in July 1977, General Logeais was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., as chief of the Airlift Forces Division, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Plans. In June 1979 he was named vice commander of the 437th Military Airlift Wing at Charleston Air Force Base. He took command of the wing in June 1981. From July 1983 to August 1984 the general served as vice commander of the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center, Robins Air Force Base, Ga. He then was assigned as deputy chief of staff for logistics at Military Airlift Command headquarters. In November 1986 he became the command's deputy chief of staff for operations. He assumed his present command in June 1987. The general is a command pilot with more than 7,200 flying hours in various airlift and training aircraft, including helicopters. His military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, and Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm. He was promoted to major general Oct. 1, 1986, with same date of rank. (Current as of April 1988)
