Airmen around the world can help create a memorial dedicated to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the Pentagon.

The campaign goal was to raise $1 million from July 21 to Aug. 8, however the fund is hundreds of thousands of dollars shy of that goal, according to Steve Kelly, of the volunteer campaign management office for the Pentagon memorial fund-raiser.

“Right now we’re nowhere close,” Kelly said. “Now is the time to give.”

Twenty campaign managers have been contacting the Pentagon’s nearly 25,000 employees to offer the opportunity to give to this cause. People worldwide can still contribute to the fund through Aug. 15, by mailing checks to:

Director, Budget and Finance, WHS Attn: Pentagon Memorial, Room 3B269, 1155 Defense Pentagon Washington, D.C. 20301-1155.

“The fund-raising efforts of our Air Force comrades have been remarkably generous,” said Sheron Richardson, Air Force campaign officer. “We’re helping to build a dream.”

Richardson said the memorial design that incorporates a series of benches, “will bridge the past to the future and will be a Pentagon park of memory and peace for the world.”

During the next two years, the Pentagon memorial campaign managers hope to raise $20 million to cover the project’s cost. Department of Defensd officials said $10 to $12 million will go toward construction, and the rest will be used for maintenance.

The memorial will be built on nearly two acres of land on the Pentagon’s west side along the path of American Airlines Flight 77 before it hit the building.
