Black Engineer of the Year Awards

Retired Air Force Gen. Lester Lyles (second from left) thanks Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz (left) for giving the keynote address on Feb. 19, 2010, at the 5th Stars and Stripes tribute dinner, which is part of the 24th Annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conference being held Feb. 18 to 20 in Baltimore. General Lyles is a founding member of the Stars and Stripes National Chair and is serving as this year's dinner chairperson. This year's tribute dinner's theme is Saluting the Role of Our Military. The conference seeks to recognize a growing cadre of diverse professionals who are contributing to America's competitiveness and serving as role models to historically underrepresented groups in the sciences. General Schwartz emphasized that in order to maintain the world's best Air and Space force it is imperative to attract, recruit, train and retain the skilled scientists and engineers needed to create tomorrow's aerospace leaders.
