Army Air Forces Staff Sgt. John H. Canty was one of eight crewmembers aboard a B-26 Maurader on a nighttime bombing mission from Easton Lodge-Essex, England, against targets near Caen, France. His B-26 was shot down between the villages of Baron-sur-Odon and Gavrus, France on June 22, 1944. World War II Airman remains recovered
An Airman who served with 555th Bombardment Squadron, 386th Bombardment Group, 9th Bomber Command, during World War II was accounted for Jan. 22, 2018.

During its 21 months of combat operations, the group launched 396 combat missions.  It delivered 16,280 tons of bombs onto enemy targets. Nearly 100 of the group's aircraft were either shot down or damaged beyond repair, over 300 airmen were killed or reported missing in action and another 217 were wounded. On Dec. 1, 2017, the 386th BG, now the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing, celebrates its 75th birthday; a journey that started at MacDill Air Field, Tampa, Florida, in 1942 and continues to this day at an undisclosed location in Southwest Asia.
