    Special Warfare Training Wing activates to better train global combat Airmen

    To meet the demand for special operations warfighters and improve retention rates for these critical career fields, Air Force officials activated the Special Warfare Training Wing Oct. 10.

    Combat-search-and-rescue Airmen press pause to tackle Hurricane Florence aftermath

    Reserve and active duty pararescuemen were undergoing dive and jump training Sept. 11, in Key West, Florida, when they were recalled back to their home units to immediately begin the process of pre-positioning for Hurricane Florence search-and-rescue operations.

    ANG rescue teams save 19 civilians following Hurricane Florence

    Air National Guard Search and Rescue teams from Alaska and New York conducted operations Sept. 17, in North Carolina's Sampson and Clinton Counties, resulting in 19 lives saved.

    HPO program increases readiness and lethality

    Pararescuemen risk life and limb in order to save the lives of others. Over time, these great efforts cause strain to the body, and, if not treated proactively, can lead to potential permanent damage. Pararescuemen from the 48th Rescue Squadron at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base realized having medical personnel on and off deployments, as well as tackling injuries and discomforts early on, would keep them mobile, deployment-ready and help ensure a pain-free future.

    Shared tears and triumphs define Memorial Day for 920th Rescue Wing commander

    A year-and-a-half into commanding the 920th Rescue Wing, Col. Kurt A. Matthews is getting ready to attend his fourth burial. Tragedies of the past year brought Memorial Day into perspective for 2,000 Airmen that serve with the 920th Rescue Wing, along with Matthews, who has seen the scars left by Vietnam in his own family.

    JBLE Airman overcomes struggle by paying it forward

    U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Michael Svoleantopoulos, 497th Operations Support Squadron weapons tactician, returned from the U.S. Air Force Pararescue Indoctrination Course much sooner than he anticipated. Svoleantopoulos spent the previous three years mentally and physically training for his goal to successfully cross-train into pararescue. Four weeks into the 13-week development and indoctrination course, he blew the horn to signify self-induced elimination.

Chris Ferrara, HC-130P/N "King" co-pilot, is part of concerted rescue effort of approximately 80 wing personnel from the 920th Rescue Wing who rescued two German citizens in distress at sea July 7, 2017 and into July 8. The victim's vessel caught fire approximately 500 nautical miles off the east coast of southern Florida. At the request of the U.S. Coast Guard's Seventh District in Miami, the 920th RQW was alerted by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, to assist in the long-range search and rescue.     Rescue Airmen save two German citizens stranded at sea

    In a concerted effort from July 7, and into the early hours of July 8, 2017, approximately 80 Airmen and four aircraft assigned to the 920th Rescue Wing successfully rescued two German citizens whose vessel caught fire approximately 500 nautical miles off the east coast of southern Florida.

    Battlefield Airmen incentive pay to be based on skill versus duty

    Based on new authority from the Defense Department, the Air Force announced its intent to begin a pilot program providing battlefield Airmen skill incentive pay based on qualified skills versus performed duties.

    68th Rescue Flight transitions to 68th Rescue Squadron

    As one of the only human based weapon systems in the Air Force, Guardian Angel must have highly trained personnel dedicated to the Air Force core function of personnel recovery. Guardian Angel is comprised of combat rescue officers, pararescuemen, and survival, evasion, resistance, and escape specialists. The 68th Rescue Flight, also known as the Guardian Angel Formal Training Unit, was stood up in 2014 at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.

    A 10-minute test: Airman delivers daughter

    When Master Sgt. Travis Shaw left for work the morning of Aug. 9, he probably couldn’t have imagined that just hours later his combat lifesaving skills would be tested in an emergency situation most pararescue specialists don’t traditionally encounter. But rather than treating a service member on the battlefield, Shaw found himself helping his wife deliver their daughter, Clara Elyse, at the bottom of the staircase in their home in Yorktown, Virginia.

    Airman seeks to rejoin pararescue team despite loss of leg

    In July 2011, Staff Sgt. August O’Neill, a pararescueman, was sent to rescue a group of Marines pinned down in Afghanistan when enemy insurgents opened fire on his team’s helicopter. A round bounced off the helicopter’s door, tearing through both of O’Neill’s lower legs and critically wounding his left. O’Neill finally told doctors to remove his left leg last year, but he remains determined to continue his career as a pararescueman.

    Astronaut rescue exercise proves Airmen ready to support space mission

    It's not common an astronaut must be rescued out of rough open waters after descending home to Earth in a crewed capsule; but when those space race-era days of human space flight return, a small Air Force detachment knows they will be ready. The 45th Operations Group’s Detachment 3 joined NASA's Commercial Crew Program; Air Force pararescuemen; combat rescue officers; and survival, evasion, resistance and escape specialists in a simulated astronaut rescue at Patrick Air Force Base Jan. 14.
