  • First sergeants to supervisors: Here are 4 things you should know

    There are approximately 2,600 active-duty Airmen assigned to Fairchild Air Force Base and only nine fully trained, diamond-wearing first sergeants on duty. That's a little more than 280 Airmen to one first shirt. This proportion is not uncommon at most bases around the command and the Air Force. Acting and additional duty first sergeants fill the gaps until a diamond-wearer can fill the position, but these special-duty senior NCOs need help from supervisors to ensure the needs of the mission, and the Airmen and their families are met.

    The Air Force and Creare, a small, New Hampshire-based business, developed a two-stage turbo-Brayton cryocooler that is expected to enhance operation of space-based infrared detectors. The resulting technology responds to Air Force requirements for improvements in performance of electro-optical space payloads by improving components of the cryocooling system.Managed by personnel at the Air Force Research Laboratory, the multi-phase Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program resulted in turbo-machine-based Brayton cryocoolers, which are ideal candidates for space-based infrared detectors because they are highly efficient, lightweight, vibration-free, multi-stage compatible and have long maintenance-free lifetimes.
