Special tactics Airman honored for role in liberating Afghan city
It was a 96-hour battle: four ambushes, 17 airstrike missions and the eventual safety of a 150-person team that led to one special tactics combat controller receiving the Silver Star April 7, 2017, at Pope Army Airfield.

From EOD Airman to Silver Star recipient
Retired Master Sgt. Kristopher Parker, an explosive ordnance disposal technician, received the Silver Star medal March 17, 2017, at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas for his courageous actions while deployed to Afghanistan in May 2014.

James awards Maxwell Airman two Silver Stars
Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James spent her final day in office honoring an Airman here Jan. 19, 2017.
Before a packed auditorium of base leadership, River Region community leaders and Air University students, James presented two Silver Star medals to Col. Christopher Barnett for his actions in Afghanistan in 2009 on two separate occasions.

James awards medal upgrades to 8 Airmen
The secretary of defense directed a review of medals, including the Air Force Cross and the Silver Star recommendations from recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, to ensure service members are appropriately recognized for their actions. Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James approved nine medal upgrades for eight Airmen Jan. 17, 2017.

Combat controller continues Special Tactics legacy of valor
During a ceremony Nov. 16, at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, Maj. Gen. Eugene Haase the Air Force Special Operations Command vice commander, presented the nation’s third highest medal for gallantry against an armed enemy of the U.S. in combat to Thiem. Thiem's actions occurred when he was deployed with an Army Special Forces team in support of Operation Freedom Sentinel.

That others may live: Silver Star medal for fallen Airman, son
Capt. Matthew Roland, of the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron, posthumously received the Silver Star on June 1 for actions taken during an ambush Aug. 26, 2015, in Afghanistan. Roland's family accepted the decoration on behalf of the fallen special tactics officer.
