BRIGADIER GENERAL JIMMY C. PETTYJOHN Brigadier General Jimmy C. Pettyjohn is director for intelligence, Headquarters U.S. Pacific Command, Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii. General Pettyjohn was born in 1933, in Kent, Okla. He graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor of arts degree in international relations in 1965 and completed Squadron Officer School at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., in 1960. He was commissioned through the aviation cadet program and received his pilot Wings in March 1955 at Webb Air Force Base, Texas. The general was assigned to the 817th Troop Carrier Squadron where he flew C-119s and C-130s from Ashiya, Japan, for three years until late 1958. In November 1958 he flew RC-121s with the 960th Airborne Early Warning and Control Squadron, Otis Air Force Base, Mass. From June 1961 to June 1963, General Pettyjohn was assigned to the faculty of Squadron Officer School at Maxwell. He then attended Arizona State University and after graduation, the general completed the Air Force Air Intelligence Course at Lowry Air Force Base, Colo. General Pettyjohn was assigned as chief of the Threat Estimate Branch, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Lindsey Air Station, Germany, from May 1966 to August 1969. Following F-4 combat crew training at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., he was assigned as F-4D flight commander with the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, until March 1971. While in Southeast Asia he served as senior duty officer at the 7th Air Force Command Post (Blue Chip), Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam. In October 1971 the general was assigned to the Defense Intelligence Agency, Washington, D.C. During this tour of duty, he held various positions involved directly in intelligence support for the secretary of Defense and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff regarding the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and the first Strategic Arms Limitation Talks Treaty. He was instrumental in supporting senior Department of Defense officials in their policy formulation efforts regarding the second Strategic Arms Limitation Talks Treaty. He became the deputy assistant chief of staff for intelligence at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe in July 1976. During this two-year assignment, General Pettyjohn was the senior U.S. military intelligence officer there. He returned to Washington, D.C., in July 1978 as director of estimates, Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff, Intelligence. In this position he provided the assistant chief of staff for intelligence with the substantive intelligence required to support the secretary and chief of staff of the Air Force, their staffs and major commands. Additionally, he supervised and directed Air Force inputs to national intelligence estimates and supported studies, analyses and assessments related to force structure and weapon systems acquisition processes. The general served in the dual position as assistant chief of staff, intelligence, U.S. Forces Korea and deputy assistant chief of staff, C2, Combined Forces Command, Seoul, South Korea, from July 1981 until assuming his present duties in June 1983. General Pettyjohn is a command pilot with more than 4,500 flying hours. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal with six oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster. He was promoted to brigadier general Feb. 1, 1982, with date of rank Oct. 1, 1981. (Current as of December 1983)
