Life support team puts pressure on high-flying pilots
SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Senior Airman Duane Thompson helps Maj. Cory Bartholomew into a U-2 reconnaissance aircraft. The space suits U-2 pilots wear are bulky and limit movement, so life-support crew specialists strap the pilots into the cockpit and connect hoses and communication systems. The pilots wear space suits because they typically fly higher than 60,000 feet -- twice as high as a commercial airliner. Airman Thompson is a life-support crew specialist with the 99th Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron's physiological support division. Major Bartholomew is a U-2 pilot with the 99th ERS.
