MAJOR GENERAL JOHN R. PAULK Major General John R. Paulk is commander of the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center, Robins Air Force Base, Ga. The center is logistics hub for most of the U.S. Air Force's transport aircraft, F-15 Eagles, helicopters, air-to-air missiles, surface motor vehicles and airborne electronics. General Paulk was born in 1931, in Willacoochee, Ga., where he graduated from high school in 1948. He attended junior college until 1950 when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He later continued his education through off-duty study. The general received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Georgia in 1962 and a master's degree in public administration from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C., in 1964. He is also a 1964 graduate of the Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. He received his pilot wings and commission in December 1952 through the aviation cadet program. He then served as an F-86 fighter pilot with the 12th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, 18th Fighter-Bomber Wing, in South Korea from March 1953 until April 1954. He was next assigned as an instructor pilot and flight test maintenance officer with the 3505th Pilot Training Wing at Greenville Air Force Base, Miss. From December 1956 to January 1959, General Paulk served with the Northern Air Materiel Area Pacific at Tachikawa Air Base, Japan, as a depot flight test maintenance officer. When he returned from Japan, he was assigned to the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., as flight test, quality control and maintenance officer flying F-100s and F-105 Thunderchiefs. He attended the University of Georgia under the "Bootstrap" program earning his bachelor of science degree in July 1962. General Paulk returned to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and remained there until September 1963 when he entered the Air Command and Staff College and concurrently completed studies for a master's degree in public administration. In August 1964 the general transferred to Headquarters Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va., as operations staff officer, Test and Evaluation Division, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. In January 1965 he was assigned as a senior operations adviser to the 516th Vietnamese Fighter Squadron at Da Nang Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, where he flew A-1H Skyraiders. In September of the same year he went to Moody Air Force Base, Ga., where he served as operations officer and commander of the 3552nd Pilot Training Squadron. General Poulk moved to the U.S. Air Force Military Personnel Center at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, in July 1967 as chief of second lieutenant assignments, and pilot and navigator training. He returned to Southeast Asia in June 1969 as operations officer and commander of the 435th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, flying F-4s with the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing's "Wolf Pack." In September 1970, following his tour of duty in Thailand, he was stationed in England at Royal Air Force Station Bentwaters as deputy commander for maintenance, 81st Tactical Fighter Wing. In September 1971 he transferred to Royal Air Force Station Lakenheath and served as deputy commander for maintenance, then as vice commander and later as commander of the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing. He returned to Royal Air Force Station Bentwaters in April 1974 as commander of the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing. He was named vice commander of the Ogden Air Logistics Center, Hill Air Force Base, Utah, in April 1975. In February 1977 he became deputy chief of staff, logistics, for the North American Air Defense Command and the Aerospace Defense Command. He assumed his present command in February 1980. General Paulk has compiled a total of 346 combat missions and is a command pilot with more than 6,000 hours flying time. His military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with 18 oak leaf clusters and Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters. In addition he holds the Republic of Vietnam Air Gallantry Cross. He was promoted to major general Dec. 19, 1979, with date of rank April 1, 1976. (Current as of August 1982)
