BRIGADIER GENERAL SAM L. HUEY Brigadier General Sam Lee Huey, a veteran of 27 years of active military service, commands the TAC Communications Region (Air Force Communications Service) with concurrent duty as deputy chief of staff, communications-electronics, Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va. He assumed these duties June 22, 1964. Prior to that, he commanded AFCS' United Kingdom Communications Region and was concurrently deputy chief of staff, communications -electronics, at Headquarters Third Air Force (U.S. Air Forces in Europe), South Ruislip Air Station, London, England. Born in Henderson, Texas, General Huey graduated from Tyler Junior College, Tyler, Texas, in June 1939. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps that September and became a qualified flight radio engineer. General Huey attended the first Signal Corps Officer Candidate School, receiving his second lieutenant's commission Oct. 1, 1941. General Huey has performed in command and staff communications-electronics positions all of his military career. His duty assignments have included command assignments, squadron through air division, and staff communications-electronics positions, wing through major command level, in most major commands of the Air Force as well as NATO. From October 1941 to February 1942, the general was assistant base communications officer at Langley Field, Va. General Huey returned to Langley 22 years later to be TAC's senior communicator and command AFCS' newly activated TAC Communications Region. During World War II, General Huey assisted in establishing the 1st Air Service Area Command at Hempstead, N.Y., and subsequently established and commanded the Signal Company, Depot, Aviation, Training Center at New Orleans Army Air Base, La., from which some 29 signal company, depot, aviation, and signal company, service groups, were trained and deployed. After a two year staff communications-electronics assignment with Headquarters 13 Air Force and Headquarters 313th Bomb Wing (Very Heavy) in Far East Air Forces, General Huey returned to Dow Field, Maine, as chief communicator for the l4th Fighter Wing. After completion of the Air Command and Staff School and selected special courses, General Huey spent three years as senior communications instructor in Air University schools at Both Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., and Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. From the Air University, the general went on a NATO assignment to Headquarters Air South, Florence, Italy, and subsequently moved to Naples, Italy, as chief of communications operations. This NATO assignment was followed in 1956 by a four year assignment as deputy director, communications-electronics, Headquarters Air Defense Command, Ent Air Force Base, Colo. From 1960 to 1962, General Huey was assistant deputy chief of staff, communications, at Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Lindsey Air Station, Germany. He was the director of telecommunications at Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe and AFCS' EAME Communications Area Headquarters, Wiesbaden, Germany, from 1962 to 1963. From there, General Huey went to South Ruislip Air Station, England, where he commanded AFCS' United Kingdom Communications Region. Among his decorations are the Legion of Merit, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.
