BRIGADIER GENERAL ALBERT A. GAGLIARDI JR. Brigadier General Albert A. Gagliardi Jr. is inspector general, Headquarters Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. General Gagliardi was born in 1937, in Newport, R.I. He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1959 as a member of the first graduating class and received a bachelor of science degree. He earned a master's degree in aerospace engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1967. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1965, Naval Command and Staff College in 1974 and the Air War College in 1979. Upon graduation from the academy, he was commissioned in the Air Force and assigned to Laredo Air Force Base, Texas, for pilot training. In July 1960 he received his pilot wings and remained at Laredo as a flight instructor. He transferred to Randolph Air Force Base in August 1962 as a T-33 flight instructor and later served as an academic instructor with the 3510th Flying Training Wing. General Gagliardi entered the Air Force Institute of Technology, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, in September 1965. Upon graduation in September 1967, he was assigned to George Air Force Base, Calif., for F-4 upgrade training. In April 1968 he was assigned to the 559th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 12th Tactical Fighter Wing, Cam Ranh Bay Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, as an F-4 fighter pilot. While there he flew 186 combat missions. The general returned to the Air Force Academy in April 1969 as an assistant professor of aeronautics. From July 1973 to July 1974 he attended the Naval Command and Staff College, Newport, R.I. He then was assigned to the 86th Flying Training Squadron, Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, as operations officer. In August 1976 he became commander of the 455th Flying Training Squadron, Mather Air Force Base, Calif. After attending the Air War College from August 1978 to June 1979, he was assigned as commandant of the Air Training Command Noncommissioned Officer Academy, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. From June 1980 to April 1981 he served as chief of the Operations, Training and Education Division, Office of the Inspector General, Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base. General Gagliardi then was assigned as commander of the 3636th Combat Crew Training Wing, known as the Air Force Survival School, Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash. In February 1983 the general assumed command of the 47th Flying Training Wing, Laughlin Air Force Base. He returned to Randolph Air Force Base and served as Air Training Command's inspector general from December 1984 to September 1985. He then became the deputy U.S. military representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Military Committee, Brussels, Belgium. He assumed his present duties in December 1987. The general is a command pilot with more than 3,800 flying hours in jet fighter aircraft. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with nine oak leaf clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with "V" device and three oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four service stars, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with six oak leaf clusters, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was promoted to brigadier general Dec. 1, 1985, with date of rank Oct. 1, 1985. (Current as of January 1988)
