BRIGADIER GENERAL JAMES M. FOGLE Brigadier General James M. Fogle is commander of the 20th North American Air Defense Command/Continental Air Defense Command Region with headquarters at Fort Lee Air Force Station, Va., and has additional duties as commander, 20th Air Division. He is responsible for the air defense of the entire southeast United States encompassing 18 states, the District of Columbia, and more than 3,000 miles of coastline. General Fogle was born in 1923, in Washington, D.C., but now calls Florida his home. Upon completion of a military science course in 1942 at the University of Maryland, he entered aviation cadet training and received his commission as second lieutenant and his pilot wings in July 1943. He was assigned to the 325th Fighter Squadron, Richmond Army Air Base, Va., and in September 1943 went to Bluenthal Field, Del., as pilot with the 391st Fighter Squadron, 366th Fighter Group. He departed with the group for duty in England and France in December 1943, and completed 110 combat missions as a P-47 pilot. He returned to the United States in December 1944 and went to Las Vegas Army Air Field, Nev.; Dale Mabry Field, Fla.; and Hunter Field, Ga.; where he served as a pilot, flight instructor and flight commander. He completed transition training to P-80 jet aircraft in August 1946 at Williams Field, Ariz., after which he was assigned to the first all-jet tactical fighter wing in the Air Force - the 27th Fighter Squadron, at March Field, Calif., where he was assigned to various positions. In February 1949 he was assigned to the 36th Tactical Fighter Wing in Germany and served as pilot, flight commander, wing training officer, operations officer and inspector. In May 1952 he was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force as director of operations, Fighter Branch, Directorate of Operations. From September 1955 until June 1956, General Fogle attended the Air Command and Staff School at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. In August 1956 he was ordered to Headquarters Pacific Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, where he served as the director of operational readiness inspection until June 1959. He then attended the Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. General Fogle was assigned in June 1960 to Aerospace Defense Command and served as operations staff officer, interceptor pilot, and commander of the 18th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron at Grand Forks Air Force Base, N.D. In January 1963 he went to Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base, Mo., to serve with Headquarters 29th Air Division as director of Tactical Evaluation and director of exercise and systems evaluation. In September 1964 he was ordered to the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as a member of the North American Branch, Plans and Programs. In November 1967 he went to the Republic of Vietnam where his duties included commander, 504th Tactical Air Support Group, Bien Hoa Air Base, and director, Horn Direct Air Support Center (DASC), Deputy Director and Director, I-DASC, 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron, Da Nang Air Base. From January 1969 to July 1969, General Fogle was commander of the 29th Air Division, Duluth International Airport, Minn. He then was assigned to Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mont., and assumed command of the 28th Air Division. He became assistant deputy chief of staff for plans at the Aerospace Defense Command headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo., in February 1970. General Fogle was assigned in July 1970 as deputy chief of staff, operations, for North American Air Defense Command/Continental Air Defense Command, with headquarters at Ent Air Force Base, Colo. He assumed the position of commander of the 20th NORAD/CONAD Region with headquarters at Fort Lee Air Station, Va., and additional duties as commander of the 20th Air Division in March 1972. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 32 oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Belgian Fourragere, and Cross of Gallantry with Palm and Gold Star of the Republic of Vietnam. General Fogle was promoted to the grade of brigadier general effective Aug. 1, 1970, with date of rank July 12, 1970. (Current as of March 1, 1973)
