MAJOR GENERAL JOHN J. DORAN JR. Major General John J. Doran Jr. is deputy commander in chief and chief of staff, U.S. Atlantic Command, U.S. Naval Station, Norfolk, Va. General Doran was born in Cambridge, Mass., and graduated from Boston College in 1953. He completed Air Command and Staff College in 1965 and Air War College in 1971. The general entered the Air Force through the aviation cadet program at James Connally Air Force Base, Texas, where he received his commission and completed navigator training in 1954. After an initial tour of duty as an air training officer at the newly established U.S. Air Force Academy, he entered pilot training at Webb Air Force Base, Texas, and received his wings in October 1958. The general then was assigned to the 19th Bombardment Wing, Homestead Air Force Base, Fla., as a B-47 co-pilot. In July 1961 he completed B-52H transition training and was assigned to Kincheloe Air Force Base, Mich. After attending Air Command and Staff College in 1965, he was assigned to the staff of the inspector general, 5th Air Force, Fuchu Air Station, Japan. In 1966 he volunteered and was selected for training as a forward air controller. Upon completion of F-100 Super Sabre orientation at Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., and forward air controller training at Hurlburt Field, Fla., he was assigned to the 23rd Tactical Air Support Squadron, Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. In August 1968 he was assigned to the U.S. Army Intelligence School, Fort Holabird, Md., as senior Air Force representative on the joint service liaison staff. After completing the Air War College in July 1971, General Doran served as duty director of operations for the commander in chief, Pacific, at Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii. General Doran transferred to Wurtsmith Air Force Base, Mich., in July 1974 as deputy commander for operations, 379th Bombardment Wing. In August 1975 he became vice commander, and in July 1977 he assumed command of the wing. From February 1979 to February 1981 he served at Headquarters Strategic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., as director of training. The general then was assigned as commander of SAC's 7th Air Division at Ramstein, Air Base, West Germany. He was the command's senior representative in Europe and oversaw SAC operations throughout the European theater. In January 1983 he returned to Strategic Air Command headquarters as deputy chief of staff for logistics. He assumed his present duties in June 1987. The general is a command pilot with more than 5,000 flying hours, nearly 800 of them flown in 230 combat missions. His military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal with 12 oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Combat Readiness Medal. He was promoted to major general Aug. 1, 1984, with date of rank Nov. 1, 1980. (Current as of November 1987)
