Brigadier General Ernest J. Clark is director of professional services in the Office of the Surgeon General, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.
General Clark was born in Cambridge, Kan., in 1925. He graduated from high school in Cedar Vale, Kan. His premedical studies were completed at Kansas State College, Kan., from 1942 to 1943 and at Westminister College, Mo., from 1943 to 1944. He earned his doctorate of medicine in 1948 at Washington University, St. Louis, Mo. General Clark served his Rotating Internship at the Research Hospital, Kansas City, Mo., from 1948 to 1949, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at San Francisco Hospital, Stanford Service, in San Francisco, Calif., from 1952-1955. He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1960. In 1965 he attended the Primary Course in Aerospace Medicine at Brooks Air Force Base, Texas, and the Medical Aspects of Advanced Warfare Course at Gunter Air Force Base, Ala.
General Clark enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve (Active) in March 1943 and served in that capacity until he received his commission in December 1946. His first Air Force assignment was as general medical officer, USAF Hospital, Francis E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo., from June 1950 to July 1952. In September 1955 he became chief, medical service, of the 7505th USAF Hospital in Burderop Park, England, and moved to the position of chief, professional services of that hospital in May 1956. At the USAF Hospital, Carswell Air Force Base, Texas, he served as chief, medical service, from August 1958 to July 1962; and chief, hospital services, deputy commander and director of medical education (rotating internship) from July 1962 to June 1964.
From July 1964 to July 1966 General Clark served as director of hospital services, deputy commander, and director of medical education for the USAF Hospital, Scott Air Force Base, Ill. He was director of professional services, Office of the Surgeon, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe Lindsey Air Station, Germany, from July 1966 to July 1969; consultant in internal medicine, Consultants Division, Office of the Surgeon General, Washington, D.C., from August 1969 to January 1971; and chief of consultants division from February 1971 to July 1973.
General Clark was command surgeon and hospital commander of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo., from July 1973 to July 1974. His next assignment was as command surgeon, Pacific Air Forces, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, from July 1974 until he began his present duties as director of professional services in the Office of the Surgeon General, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, in April 1975.
General Clark is a member of the Air Force Association of Internists and Allied Specialists and American Medical Association. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and between 1971 and 1973 was U.S. Air Force governor of the American College of Physicians.
His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon and the Navy Good Conduct Medal.
He was promoted to the grade of brigadier general effective May 1, 1975, with same date of rank.
