BRIGADIER GENERAL JAMES G. SILLIMAN

Brigadier General James G. Silliman is commander, 1035th USAF Field Activities Group, and chief, Air Force Technical Applications Center, Alexandria, Va.

General Silliman was born in Greenwich, Conn., in 1921. He graduated from Paseo High School, Kansas City, Mo., and attended Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. He entered the Army Air Corps in June 1941, completed aviation cadet training in September 1942 and received his pilot wings and commission as second lieutenant at Moody Field, Ga.

Between September 1942 and February 1946 he performed various flight instructor duties at George Field, Ill., and Smyrna Army Air Field, Tenn. He next was assigned in the personnel field, served at Robins Field, Ga.; in June 1946 went to Italy for a tour of duty; and in December 1947 was transferred to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz.

During the Korean War in July 1950, he was assigned to the Far East Air Forces and served in Korea and Japan in the Directorate of Personnel of the Fifth Air Force and the 314th Air Division, and became director of military personnel for the 314th Air Division and Japan Air Defense Force. In June 1953 he entered the Air Command & Staff School, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.

In January 1954 General Silliman was assigned as commander of the 773d Troop Carrier Squadron at Ardmore Air Force Base, Okla., and went with the squadron to France in November 1954. He returned to Ardmore Air Force Base in May 1955 and became wing operations officer for the 463d Troop Carrier Wing. In June 1957 he was transferred to Tactical Air Command headquarters at Langley Air Force Base, Va., where he served as assistant chief, Airlift Division, and then director of manpower and organization for the deputy for operations.

In July 1961 General Silliman was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Personnel, where he served in the Directorate of Personnel Planning as chief, Long Range Branch, Plans Division; and in February 1962 became chief, Programs Division. He was transferred to Pope Air Force Base, N.C., and assumed command of the 464th Tactical Airlift Wing in May 1966, and in addition he became commander of the USAF Tactical Airlift Center when it was activated Sept. 1, 1966.

General Silliman went to the Panama Canal Zone in June 1967 as deputy chief of staff for operations and training in Headquarters U.S. Air Forces Southern Command, and in December 1967 became commander of the 24th Air Commando Wing. He served as director of intelligence (J-2), U.S. Southern Command, from June 1968 to June 1970.

General Silliman became commander, 1035th USAF Field Activities Group, and chief, Air Force Technical Applications Center, Alexandria, Va., in June 1970.

He received his bachelor of arts degree in business administration from the University of Maryland in 1964, and his master of science degree in financial management from The George Washington University in 1965.

He is a command pilot with more than 6,700 hours flying time. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon.

He was promoted to the temporary grade of brigadier general effective Aug. 1, 1968, with date of rank June 26, 1968.
