MAJOR GENERAL ROGER K. RHODARMER Major General Roger K. Rhodarmer is commander of the U.S. Air Force Tactical Air Reconnaissance Center, Tactical Air Command at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C. General Rhodarmer was born Feb. 18, 1922, in Canton, N.C., where he graduated from Canton High School in 1940, and then attended North Carolina State College. He began his military career by entering pilot training in March 1942 and graduated from the Army Air Corps Flying School at Ellington Field, Texas with a commission as second lieutenant and his pilot wings in January 1943. During World War II, he served as pilot and operations officer with the 439th Bombardment Squadron of the Twelfth Air Force in the European Theater of Operations from June 1943 to February 1945. He returned to the United States with the 439th Squadron and in July 1945 went with the squadron to Okinawa to serve in the Pacific Theater of Operations until December 1945. He returned to Europe in April 1946 and was assigned to the 166th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, engaged in photographing objectives throughout the area. From January 1947 to September 1947 General Rhodarmer was intelligence officer for the 162d Reconnaissance Squadron at Langley Air Force Base, Va., and then was selected as a member of the original Royal Air Force Exchange Group to go to England on a year of exchange duty with a fighter unit. He returned to Langley Air Force Base in January 1949. In August 1949 he was assigned to the 363d Tactical Reconnaissance Group at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., where he trained reconnaissance crews during the Korean War. In July 1953 he reported to the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing in Korea. Upon his return to the United States in May 1954, he was assigned to special reconnaissance activities with Headquarters U.S. Air Force in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations. In October 1956 General Rhodarmer attended the Armed Forces Staff College at Norfolk, Va. After graduation in January 1958, he was assigned to Allied Forces Southern Europe in Naples, Italy. In July 1960 he entered the Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pa., and upon completion in August 1961, he was assigned as chief of the Reconnaissance Laboratory and later as assistant deputy for reconnaissance at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. General Rhodarmer again was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force in September 1966 where he served in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Research and Development as deputy assistant for reconnaissance and in June 1968 was assigned as deputy director of operational requirements and developments plans. In March 1969 he became the assistant to the deputy chief of staff, research and development, for the F-15. He was assigned as director of reconnaissance and electronic warfare in July 1969. In September 1970 General Rhodarmer assumed command of the U.S. Air Force Tactical Air Reconnaissance Center, Shaw Air Force Base, S.C. His military decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with 11 oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation Emblem with oak leaf cluster and Croix de Guerre with palm (France). General Rhodarmer's hometown is Canton, N.C. He was promoted to the temporary grade of major general effective Aug. 1, with date of rank Feb. 1, 1966.
