JOSEPH D. "DEAN" YOUNT

Mr. Joseph D. Yount is the Director for Special Project Integration, Intelligence Support to Information Operations (IO) and Intelligence Operations (A2Z), Headquarters United States Air Force. He assumed this position in September 2006. His position and organization provides advice to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (AF/A2) on formulating policy and intelligence support to Information Operations. He coordinates management of intelligence support to capabilities, resources and intelligence operations within the Department of Defense and with other governmental agencies. He is responsible for communication and creating Air Force’s strategic vision of intelligence operations to Combatant Commands and their components. His organization evaluates Air Force intelligence operations for responsiveness to Air Force, Joint and DoD requirements. His unit interfaces with Congressional, DoD, Joint and major command staffs to ensure warfighting requirements are met. Acting on A-2’s behalf, he resolves key issues with external and internal DoD agencies, the Air Staff; MAJCOMs and senior Air Force, DoD, Joint Chiefs of Staff and Intelligence Community representatives.

Mr. Yount was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1971 through the ROTC program at The Citadel and earned his wings at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas. Upon graduation, his first assignment was as a forward air controller in the Republic of Vietnam. Upon his return, he served as an aircraft commander, instructor pilot and flight examiner, and flew many models of the 135-series aircraft.

His staff assignments include duty as a wargamer at Headquarters, Strategic Air Command and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was an Air Force Research Fellow at Columbia University’s Institute of War and Peace Studies. He was assigned to Headquarters Air Force in three positions; an Arms Control expert, an Air Force Planner for Joint and National Security Matters, and a member of the Air Force Inspector General organization. In addition to these assignments, he has served as a squadron commander, an assistant director for operations and vice wing commander. His last military assignment prior to his retirement in 2001 was the Deputy Director for Electronic Warfare. His last civilian assignment prior to his current assignment was Director of Staff, AF/XOI.
