Leaders stress holiday safety

In a joint Letter to Airmen, Air Force Secretary Michael W. Wynne and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. T. Michael Moseley stressed the importance of safety during the holiday season.

The two leaders want Airmen to watch out for each other. And they said though the service puts emphasis on safety, the Air Force lost 45 Airmen to private motor vehicle accidents and other injuries the past fiscal year. Eight Airmen committed suicide.

"We're asking you once again to keep a close eye on your Wingmen -- your friends, loved ones and fellow Airmen -- t his holiday season," they wrote, asking Airmen to help preserve the Air Force's most previous resource -- it's Airmen.

The leaders caution that during the holiday season many people participate in off-duty activities which are inherently risky, necessitating increased vigilance and leadership to prevent mishaps and tragedy.

"Each life we save and each mishap we prevent translates directly into preserving combat capability for our nation. We are at war and need every Airman combat ready and in the fight," they wrote.

This "Letter to Airmen," released Dec. 4, and other senior leader viewpoints is in the library section of Air Force Link.
