Air Force defeats Saint Mary's at SMC Fall Classic

The U.S. Air Force Academy women's soccer team earned its first win of the season, defeating Saint Mary's 2-1 Sept. 9 at the Saint Mary's College Fall Classic here. 

The win boosts the Falcons to 1-4-1 on the season and drops the Gaels to 1-5-0.

Falcons sophomore Corbin Sanford's goal in the 65th minute was enough to give the academy its first win of the year. Melinda Mokos was credited with the assist.

The Falcons took an early 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute, as Rhett Chase scored on a header off Rachael Emory's corner kick. Saint Mary's responded in the 56th minute with a goal from Nikki Schrey to tie the match.

Despite getting out-shot 14-5, the Falcons were able to capitalize on their opportunities.

Freshman goalkeeper Ashlee Curtis earned the win in her first career start. Curtis recorded five saves in the win. Jennifer Zenovich had one save in the loss for the Gaels.

The Air Force returns to action Sept. 12 at Northern Colorado. The match, originally slated for 7 p.m., will now kick off at 4 p.m.
