Airman dies in maintenance accident Published July 19, 2004 CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AFPN) -- Tech. Sgt. Joseph Gardner III died early July 18 while performing an inspection on a C-17 Globemaster III.An investigation is currently under way to determine how he became pinned under the spoiler on the aircraft’s wing.Sergeant Gardner, 37, was an integrated avionics technician with the 437th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron here. He entered the Air Force in August 1988, arrived here in 2002, and was being reassigned to the 723rd Air Mobility Squadron at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, later this month.Hailing from Eight Mile, Ala., Sergeant Gardner was single and is survived by his parents, Joseph and Claudia Gardner, and his sister, Lori, and brother, Kenneth.
