The winners of the 2013 Air Force Design Awards were announced recently by Maj. Gen. Theresa Carter, the Air Force Civil Engineer chief of staff for logistics, installations and mission support.

"These winning projects represent the Air Force's continued commitment to providing quality facilities that are truly resource efficient and built to last," Carter said. "They were judged not only on their aesthetic merits, but strong emphasis was placed on cost control, energy efficiency, functionality and sustainability."

The award program, established in 1976 and managed by the Air Force Civil Engineer Center, recognizes and promotes design excellence.

Design awards are presented in three levels. Honor awards signify the best in design, followed by merit awards. Citation awards, the third award level, are given to designs that possess a special aspect that also deserves recognition, said David Duncan, Air Force Design Awards program manager at AFCEC.

"The winning projects help establish a benchmark for the level of excellence that the Air Force expects for all of its facilities," Duncan said. "Each year, we make an effort to secure jurors of the highest professional standards who are knowledgeable of the Air Force's design standards."
