A number of final Department of Defense and military passengers board a 774th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron C-130 Hercules at Forward Operating Base Sharana, Paktika province, Afghanistan, Sept. 28, 2013. The aircrew of "Growler 51" set out a few hours before sunrise Sept. 28 to fly the last of the U.S. cargo out of Forward Operating Base Sharana before the base was officially transferred to the Afghan government. Twelve hours and three round-trip flights later, the 774th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron Airmen completed the mission.

The 19th MCT, a small squadron of Air Force surface movement controllers and aerial porters, have the herculean task of overseeing the vast majority of retrograde operations at FOB Salerno. Hunter and Paule are both forward deployed from Travis Air Force Base, Calif.

Staff Sgt. Daniel Hall walked into the air cell room and proclaimed, "I got us a case of Pop-Tarts and they haven't expired yet!" Finding such items on a base in the middle of retrograde is a big deal. Forward Operating Base Salerno's dining facility is down to one hot meal a day and there are no stores. Hall, a Smith Valley, Nev. native, is part of the 19th Movement Control Team, a small squadron of Air Force surface movement controllers and aerial porters tasked with overseeing the vast majority of retrograde operations at FOB Salerno.
