5/4/2011 - Dyess Air Force Base, Texas (AFNS) -- Service members aboard a Modular Airborne Firefighting System-equipped C-130 Hercules drop fire retardant onto a West Texas wildfire April 27 and 28. The wildfires have spread across parts of Texas and have burned more than 1,000 square miles of land.
5/5/2011 12:13:25 PM ET Our son Col. Hack sent us a link to these pictures. Being in the middle of this conflegration is an interesting experience. We have only seen maps of the fire boundaries, nothing from the air. Thanks for the opportunity to see the situation from the air. The flying conditions in the area were very iffy most of the time. Turbulance off mountain tops combined with fire and smoke made for interesting experiences for Fire Fighting aircraft as well as those on the ground. No major accidents or injuries. Thank God.
