May I take a minute to point out that all of the awards listed do not belong solely to the personnel career field. FSS is a very diverse community that includes a variety of AFSCs. I am a personnelist currently deployed on a JET tasking to Iraq. Yes, we deploy. Who knew? Many are quick to blame the personnel community for any type of issue, personnel related or not. Let me remind you that the personnel community has been there for you every step of your career. We were there when you married, had children, got commissioned, reenlisted, PCS'd, promoted, demoted, retired, separated. We are even there after you take your last breath. @Viper Pilot, I put my boots on the same way you do and let me tell you the grass is not always greener. Hope you find that crackerjack personnelist at your base. Happy hunting.

While I think the number of awards is excessive, there are some units that I give kudos to. But I say this because I have been to the finance or personnel office that closes 2 days a week for training between 1300 and 1600 after they take their hour lunch or close early on Thursday when a 4 day weekend is upcoming.

Congratulations to all the award winners. To many of the negative comments, many of us think of personnel support like the phone companies. If all is OK, ho hum, but let anything happen and we want them here and NOW to handle our specific issue. Not all can be fliers or snake eaters but FSS, as one indicated, takes care of the force. And FSS does support taskings outside the wire, such as expeditionary tasking of convoy escort, and some have passed on due to enemy actions, such as ambush and IEDs. Please give them their due. The winners, supervisors, and commanders all work very hard to make sure the force, active, Air Guard, Reserve, retirees, and their dependents are taken care of. Just as great pilots will not take total credit for their accomplishments, they will thank the mission planners, maintenance crew, physiology specialists, and a host of others. Let these professionals be recognized without the rancor.

@ Caveman - Yes, hold operators hands. You mean I was supposed to do what I was told before you'll give me orders? @ Viper Pilot - Not all of us can be fire-breathing killing machines like you. Some of us may have even been prior enlisted and too old for SUPT or SUNT. Doesn't make my commission any less valid than yours. From someone who's experienced most cases--whereas you have your own experience to draw on--the operators aren't doing much of anything except complaining about why I'm not doing what they can do for themselves. And why aren't they doing it for themselves? Because of attitudes like yours. They think they're too good for it. So as much as you may think I don't need to be here, I do, and it's because of people like you.

To FSS Lt really - walk in your boots for a day and hold some operators hands while they navigate the 'virtual' personnel actions I'd say the ops and support personnel are already doing your job atop of theirs. I sure could use a crackerjack personnelist like you at my base. Perhaps you'd like to walk in my boots apply for the next SUPT or SUNT opportunity. I'm sure you'll get the PDSM. Happy Computing.

@FSS LT - Hold operators' hands? Yes it is your job to help fellow Airmen with personnel actions. Cross-train if you don't like it.

117 awards - I may have miscounted. Does seem excessive.

@ ROF - yes a little harsh, but I understand the sarcasm. And since when do wings have A1s - aren't they the MSS, I mean the FSS? These awards are the sum of when these were for the separate career field - just seems more daunting merged together. But the Comm and Info, uh, cyber awards run a close second in terms of recognizing such broad functional diversity. @ FSS LT - I commend your staunch defense of your AFSC and field. Best of luck with upcoming force management now and when you hit FGO but as a personnelist you'll be fine. Services personnel and manpower were and are still completely different animals my impression of the new FSS construct was a work in progress but I commend you for making it work and helping all airmen grasp those tough vitual concepts to help people help themselves. And agree jabs go to the senior leadership. Perhaps we in the future we'll have a 38F as CSAF to fix this mess. All the career awards should help with that promotion.

Hey rof--I don't care what kind of operator you are, you obviously have never been in such a diverse unit as a Force Support Squadron. We do everything from watch your children, cut your orders, feed you, educate you, house you, and yes, protect you. If you don't think so go talk to a SARC. The simple diversity of an FSS necessitates this much recognition. What we do may not seem important to you or those of your ilk but let me assure you, as someone who's been a military personnel chief, those who think everything is virtual should come walk in my boots for a day, hold some operators hands while they navigate the 'virtual' personnel actions like I've had to. Oh, and it's the senior leaders who determine the RIF, SERB, etc. requirements, not these well-deserving Airmen. Direct your arrows to them.
FSS LT, East Coast USA

Wow, ROF, that's awful mean of you. These awards recognize the hard work of many individuals from a very demanding AFSC. Well done, well deserved, and well recognized professionals.
MIKE, COS CO

Wow. While I congratulate the winners, was there anyone in the personnel world that did NOT get an award. I can think of no other AF tribe that has so much self-adulation. What a self-licking ice cream cone. Must they create these awards to remain competitive for promotions, etc? These seem especially heinous given all the personnel SNAFUs which Airmen endured last year and this year with RIFs, SERBs, etc. And since nearly every thing is virtual and self-service, perhaps every Airman should self-nominate himself for such as award. As an old operator, once a shoeclerk always a shoeclerk.
ROF, COS CO
