10/25/2011 - RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFNS) -- Line of the Air Force active duty officers interested in opportunities to help build and sustain international relationships can apply for attaché duty at locations ranging from Burma to the United Kingdom, Air Force Personnel Center officials announced Oct. 25.

AFPC and the Secretary of the Air Force, International Affairs are accepting applications for senior defense official/defense attaché, air attaché and assistant air attaché duty at nine locations, with selectees reporting for training between April 2012 and April 2013. Applications must be received by AFPC and SAF/IA by Dec. 15.

"Attachés officially represent the Secretary of Defense, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Secretary of the Air Force and Air Force Chief of Staff to the host country defense ministry," said Col. David Slade, the AFPC assignments director. "They provide critical advice to the U.S. ambassador and country team, and directly support our efforts to fight global terrorism."

Several defense attaché offices have C-12 Hurons assigned, so applicants for those offices will need to be fixed-wing pilots, Slade said.

Attaché applicants must be active duty senior captains, majors or lieutenant colonels, officials said. An operations background, foreign language skills and experience in the region are highly desired, although not mandatory. Applicants must have taken the Defense Language Aptitude Battery, and all their immediate family members must be U.S. citizens.

Candidates must have their assignment functional manager's written e-mail release to compete for attaché duty.

The application can be downloaded from the Air Force Portal (search for "attaché program" and select the October 2011 attaché application option). Once complete, applications must be mailed to both AFPC and SAF/IA at afpc.dpaos@randolph.af.mil and saf.iapa@pentagon.af.mil. If selected for an interview, applicants will be notified by Jan. 31, 2012.
