John I too have extensive experience with the reserves both at the wing and staff levels. Organization skill and talent do not equal capability nor mission accomplishment. The number of reservists I know who have not ever done anything to contribute to the mission either directly or indirectly is a disgrace given that we've been at war for over 10 years now.

I retired from the AD... my last assignment was HQ AFRC. I was floored at the skill and talent in the Reserves far more organized that the AD. In fact I knew one Brig Generals listed in this article we were both AD... he's the typical AF story damn sharp leader tired of the BS goes to the adult military... my AD brethren the ARC is impressive save your ignorant comments for a less public forum you're making the AD look bad.

Reserve Major I hear what you are saying on that concept but it doesn't hold water for a vast majority of jobs. I'm tired of dealing with units where I should be talking to the Commander but instead have to talk to someone else and then wait for the Commander to make the actual call a week or so later when he is at work. I'm tired of watching my tax dollars pay to keep part-time aircrew current in training units that will never deploy and never train a student because they aren't proficient enough. There is still a place for reserves but it's time to let the AD decide when and where.

If you really want to save money - cut the active duty in half and make everybody Air Reserve Technicians. We do the exact same work wear the exact same uniform...yet get paid significantly less when you take into consideration tax exempt BAHBAS and don't get anywhere near the benefits we pay for our medical and dental and have to work until we are 60 to collect retirement. If you take away the reserves...Active Duty will fall flat on it's face Oh by the way spent over 10 years on AD and almost the same in the reserves. So I know of what I speak

I too was active duty Air Force and was stationed with a reserve refueling wing while on active duty. I recall how we experts looked down our nose at the reserve wing and never let them work alone for fear they 'would screw something up. That was 21 one years ago. For the last 20 years I have served with the Air National Guard and can now look back at how ignorant that young Airman and his supervision was. In the past 20 years I have served side by side with active duty reserve and guard. And have seen good an bad in all three elements. My flight has 13rd the manning of what my active counterparts flight would have. But yet our production is ten fold. Are there some slugs in the ANGAFRES Yes but per capita there are just as many on active duty. We all three serve unique requirements. Stop the hating and start participating.

Actually the Reserve and ANG help save money with professionals mostly serving in a part time capacity to fulfill critical mission needs. When on active duty I thought the same as you but walk a mile in Reserve or ANG boots then you will understand. Same commitment duty and pride. Next time you pull up to a tanker it could very well be a Guardsman or Reservist topping you off.

IMO the reserves are only around anymore in order to preserve the Minute Man tradition. We should drop the reserves and the ANG and then use the savings to plus up active duty manning. The reserve Individual Mobilization Augmentees' purpose is to backfill active duty offices when a member is deployed. When that happens we have to pay them per diem lodging and their travel expenses--all out of the active duty budget--and that's if the AFRC agrees to pay the salary for the man days to be able to fill the position. To top it off we have to search for a vlounteer and they can still say no. Didn't they volunteer when they joined up

Unbelievable the manpower required to tell active-duty Commanders how to use the reserves. How about instead we redesign the reserves such that it doesn't require a 1 or 2-star middle man for them to be used. Why is there a reserve command Wouldn't a better system be to have reserve airmen integrated throughout all levels and areas of the Air Force and educate all Commanders on how to effectively utilize their airmen both active and reserve
