For 75 years, American Airmen have excelled as they execute the Air Force mission to fly, fight, and win — delivering airpower anytime, anywhere in defense of our nation.  

Airmen are called to “Innovate, Accelerate and Thrive” as the U.S. Air Force and Department of the Air Force approach their 75th anniversaries on Sept. 18, 2022. Airmen will always be there to provide America with the airpower it needs to defend the nation, deter or defeat our adversaries, reassure our partners and allies, and help diplomacy proceed from a position of strength.

This Month in AF History

  • March 10, 1966:  Medal of Honor. Maj. Bernard Fisher, from the 1st Commando Squadron, landed an A-1E on a Shau runway, Vietnam, while under fire from North Vietnamese troops to rescue a downed pilot, Maj. Dafford W. Myers, from the 602 Fighter Squadron. President Lyndon B. Johnson presented Fisher the medal for heroism Jan. 19, 1967. Fisher became the first Air Force Airman to be honored for action in the Southeast Asian conflict.  
  • March 16, 1966: Gemini VIII. A U.S. Air Force Gemini launch vehicle (Titan II) took Neil Armstrong and David Scott into orbit for the mission. The astronauts accomplished the first docking maneuver in space by meeting up with an Agena Target Vehicle, developed by Space Systems Division, and launched on an Atlas booster. Air Force pararescuemen attached flotation gear to the Gemini VIII space capsule within 20 minutes of splashdown 500 miles east of Okinawa, Japan. This was the first time pararescue forces participated in the recovery of a Gemini capsule. 
  • March 12, 1980: Around-the-World Flight/Mackay Trophy. Through March 14, 1980, two 410BMW B-52Hs from K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base, Mich., flew nonstop, 19,353 nautical miles around the world in 42 hours and 30 minutes, averaging 488 mph. Majors William H. Thurston and John M. Durham commanded the flight from Offutt AFB, Neb. across Canada, the North Atlantic, Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Strait of Malacca, the South China Sea and back to Offutt AFB. They earned the Mackay Trophy for the flight. 

AF Legends: Major Bernard F. Fisher

Major Bernard F. Fisher In 1967, then Maj. Fisher became the first living Air Force Medal of Honor recipient when he was presented the medal at a White House ceremony by then President Lyndon B. Johnson. He   went above and beyond the call of duty and risked his own life to save a fellow pilot who had been shot down at A Shau Air Base during the battle of A Shau Valley, March 10, 1966. Maj. Fisher was the first of 12 Airmen to receive the medal during the Vietnam conflict.
