MAJOR GENERAL (DR.) THOMAS J. LOFTUS Maj. Gen. (Dr.) Thomas J. Loftus is Assistant Surgeon General for Health Care Operations, Office of the Surgeon General, Bolling Air Force Base, D.C. He is the Air Force Medical Service focal point for health care operations and is responsible for providing health care programs and policy guidance to more than 42,000 Airmen and 75 fixed medical treatment facilities, overseeing nearly $5.4 billion of AFMS funding and all AFMS deployed operations. General Loftus was born in Scranton, Pa. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve through the Health Professions Scholarship Program in 1973. Following medical school, he entered active duty as a captain in June 1977. General Loftus has completed residency training and received board-certification in both family practice and aerospace medicine. He has held a variety of medical assignments, from squadron flight surgeon to major command surgeon. His background includes experience in readiness training, aeromedical evacuation, the Air Force Reserve, and command at numerous levels. He has served as the dual-hatted Command Surgeon for U.S. Transportation Command and AMC, and he has served as Command Surgeon for both Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Ramstein Air Base, Germany, and the Air Force Reserve. As chief flight surgeon, General Loftus has more than 1,300 hours flying time in a variety of aircraft.
