BRIGADIER GENERAL EVAN WEIBLE SCHEAR Brigadier General Evan Weible Schear is commander, David Grant USAF Medical Center, at Travis Air Force Base, Calif. General Schear was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1922, and graduated from Westerville High School, Westerville, Ohio, in 1940. His premedical education was completed at Otterbein College, Westerville, Ohio, and he graduated from the Duke University School of Medicine in March 1946. He served a 15-month internship at The Watts Hospital, Durham, N.C., from April 1946 to June 1947, as a civilian; and his residency in general surgery was completed at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, in June 1954. General Schear began his active military duty as an enlisted man in July 1943 in the Army Specialized Training Program and remained in this status until March 1946 when he became an officer in the inactive reserve. He returned to active duty in August 1947 as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and attended a four-week basic course at the Brooke Army Medical Center Field Service School. His first assignment as a physician was to the Fifth Army General Dispensary at St. Louis, Mo. He became a member of the Regular Army in January 1949 and transferred to the Air Force Medical Service in July 1949. Six months later he was assigned to the hospital at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, where for six months he was a general duty officer, first on the General Surgical Service and, after the hospital was closed in March 1950, in a dispensary in the basic training area. He was in residency training from July 1950 to June 1954 at Brooke Army Medical Center. General Schear then went to Osan, Korea, where he commanded the 6171st Tactical Hospital. Six months later he went to Nagoya, Japan, where he served as chief of surgery for five months and chief of professional services for 13 months. From September 1956 to September 1958, General Schear served as chief of professional services and the only surgeon at the hospital at Langley Air Force Base, Va. He was transferred to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, in September 1958 where he served as chief, General Surgical Service; chief, Department of Surgery; director of hospital services; and lastly as deputy commander of the hospital. He was assigned to Wilford Hall USAF Hospital at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, in May 1964, as chief of general surgery; became chief of the Department of Surgery in February 1965; and director of hospital services in March 1968. He was assigned as commander of the USAF Hospital at Wiesbaden, Germany, from July 1969 to July 1972. General Schear was assigned as commander of the David Grant USAF Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base, Calif., in July 1972. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon with two oak leaf clusters. General Schear's hometown is Westerville, Ohio. He was promoted to the grade of brigadier general effective April 2, 1973, with date of rank March 19, 1973. (Current as of Oct. 15, 1973)
