Brigadier General John R. Wormington is director of command, control, communications and computer systems (J-6), U.S. Transportation Command. Scott Air Force Base, Ill. He is responsible for systems planning, integration, operations and maintenance of the command, control, communications and computer systems.
General Wormington was born in Greenville, Texas, and graduated from Manzano High School in 1962. He earned a bachelor's degree in engineering science, astronautical engineering and physics from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1966, and master's degrees in astronautical sciences from Stanford University in 1967, aerospace operations management from the University of Southern California in 1969 and business administration from Auburn University in 1976. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1969, Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1970, Air Command and Staff College in 1976, Defense Systems Management College in 1979 and Air War College in 1984.
His first assignment was as space systems analyst at the Space and Missile Systems Organization, Los Angeles Air Force Station, Calif., in 1967. In 1969 he became aide-de-camp to the commander.
In 1971 General Wormington was assigned as a systems engineer and duty director of Task Force Alpha and the Igloo White Program, Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. He then served as the technical manager for the Satellite Early Warning System, 14th Aerospace Force Operations Staff, Ent Air Force Base, Colo.
He returned to Los Angeles Air Force Station in 1976 as manager of system integration, Department of Defense Space Shuttle Program Office, Space and Missile Systems Organization.
In 1979 he was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., as a planning and program officer for space defense, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans. In 1980 he became the space shuttle program element monitor, Deputy Chief of Staff for Research, Development and Acquisition, Air Force headquarters.
General Wormington returned to Los Angeles in 1964 as director of Surveillance, Command and Control Systems for Space Division's deputy for space defense. He then was assigned as the director of special activities, deputy for communications and operational support at Space Division. In 1987 he became the director of the Joint Department of Defense and National Aeronautics and Space Administration Advanced Launch System Program Office there. In February 1990 he was assigned as commander of the Eastern Space and Missile Center, Patrick Air Force Base, Fla.
The general's military awards and decorations include Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, and NASA Exceptional Service Medal.
He was promoted to brigadier general July 2, 1992, with same date of rank.
