MAJOR GENERAL JAMES TAYLOR JR Major General James Taylor Jr. is deputy judge advocate general, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. General Taylor was born in 1927, in Rural Hall, N.C. He graduated from Mars Hill (N.C.) College in 1945; was awarded a bachelor of arts degree by the University of North Carolina in 1947; and immediately entered the university's School of Law. He received his juris doctor degree in 1949, and has been admitted to the practice of law in the courts of North Carolina, the U.S. Court of Military Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. After more than two years in private law practice, General Taylor accepted a direct commission as a first lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General's Department, U.S. Air Force Reserve. He was assigned as assistant staff judge advocate, Biggs Air Force Base, Texas, from December 1951 to July 1953, when he received a commission in the Regular Air Force. He was then assigned as assistant staff judge advocate, 3909th Air Base Group, Royal Air Force Station Greenham Common, England, until July 1954. He next served as assistant staff judge advocate, Headquarters 7th Air Division, South Ruislip, England. Upon General Taylor's return to the United States in May 1956, he was assigned to Headquarters Strategic Air Command at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., as assistant staff judge advocate. He served there until July 1960, when he became appellate government counsel, Office of the Judge Advocate General, Headquarters U.S. Air Force. In July 1964 General Taylor transferred to the 6486th Air Base Wing, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, as staff judge advocate. He served in this capacity until July 1967, when he was assigned to the Legislative Division, Directorate of Legislative Liaison, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. He became chief of the Legislative Division in January 1971. From June 1972 to August 1974, he was the staff judge advocate at 13th Air Force, Clark Air Base, Philippines. He then became director of civil law, Office of the Judge Advocate General, U.S. Air Force headquarters, and remained in this position until he assumed his present duties in October 1977. General Taylor's military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters and Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. He was promoted to major general Dec. 4, 1980, with date of rank Aug. 1, 1977. (Current as of March 1981)
