BRIGADIER GENERAL (DR.) HERBERT V. SWINDELL Brigadier General Herbert V. Swindell is director, medical plans and resources, Office of the Surgeon General, U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. General Swindell was born in 1923, in Caney, Kan. Upon graduation from Kenwood High School in Baltimore in 1940, he entered the University of Maryland and earned a bachelor of science degree. As a member of the Navy V-12 program he received his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1946. General Swindell was certified by the American Board of Surgery and the Board of Thoracic Surgery in 1958. He began his career in the U.S. Air Force as a captain in November 1951 and served as chief, surgical service, 3510th USAF Hospital, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, until October 1953. He then served as chief, surgical service, 5005th USAF Hospital, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, until July 1955. Upon completion of additional training in surgery, General Swindell was assigned as chief, general surgery and assistant chief, thoracic surgery, at the USAF Hospital at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, from 1958 to 1959. General Swindell was chief, surgical service, USAF Hospital, Chanute Air Force Base, Ill., from June 1959 to July 1960. He next was transferred to USAF Hospital, Wiesbaden, Germany, as chief, surgical service. In August 1963 he was appointed chairman of the department of surgery at the USAF Hospital, Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. He remained at Keesler to serve as director of hospital service and deputy commander of the hospital from June 1966 to July 1968. He then was transferred to the Republic of the Philippines to command the Clark Air Base USAF Hospital. During this tour of duty he flew 14 combat missions in C-141 aircraft while on temporary duty in Southeast Asia. He returned to the United States in August 1970 as commander of the USAF Medical Center at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. General Swindell assumed duties as command surgeon for the Military Airlift Command, at Scott Air Force Base, in August 1973. He assumed his present duties on July 19, 1978. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Association of Military Surgeons, Society of Air Force Clinical Surgeons and the Air Force Association. He has published several professional articles in surgical journals. A flight surgeon, General Swindell has flown extensively in the C-141 Starlifter and the C-9 Nightingale "flying hospital" aircraft used in the Military Airlift Command worldwide aeromedical evacuation system. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with three oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award ribbon. He was promoted to the grade of brigadier general on May 1, 1975, with date of rank April 29, 1975. (Current as of April 1979)
