BRIGADIER GENERAL ERLIND G. ROYER Brigadier General Erlind G. Royer is dean of faculty, U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. General Royer was born in 1939, in Missoula, Mont., and graduated from Flathead County High School, Kalispell, Mont., in 1957. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Montana State University in 1961, a master of science degree from Stanford University in 1962 and a doctorate from the University of Illinois in 1970 - all in the field of electrical engineering. General Royer was a distinguished graduate of Squadron Officer School in 1966, and completed Armed Forces Staff College in 1973 and the National War College in 1980. He was commissioned as a distinguished graduate of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program in June 1961 and entered active duty in October 1961. After completing his master's degree in June 1962, he was assigned to the San Bernardino Air Materiel Area, Norton Air Force Base, Calif., as a project engineer responsible for flight instrumentation of Atlas, Titan and Thor ballistic missiles. In July 1965 General Royer transferred to the Sacramento Air Materiel Area, McClellan Air Force Base, Calif., as the project engineer responsible for engineering analysis of Thor missile launches in support of a space program. He entered the University of Illinois under the Air Force Institute of Technology program in January 1967 to complete his doctorate. In August 1969 General Royer was assigned to the Air Force Academy, where he served on the faculty as an associate professor and head of the Radio Frequency Systems Laboratory in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He entered the Armed Forces Staff College in January 1973. Upon completion in July 1973 he was assigned to the deputy for airborne warning and control systems, Electronic Systems Division, Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., as manager for the navigation and guidance subsystem of the E-3A Sentry. He was also responsible for developing a self-defense subsystem and eventually took over all advanced engineering development for the program. In February 1975 he transferred to the Over-the-Horizon Radar System Program Office as chief of the Engineering and Test Division. He served as system program director from April 1977 to July 1979. After graduation from the National War College in June 1980, the general was assigned to Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, Casteau, Belgium, as chief of the Survivability Section, Command and Control Branch, Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations. In June 1981 he became deputy chief of the Command and Control Branch. After a major reorganization of the headquarters in January 1983, he served as chief of the Command and Control Requirements Section. General Royer returned to the academy in July 1983 as permanent professor and head of the Department of Electrical Engineering. In March 1984 he also became responsible for the microcomputers in the dormitories project. This project put a microcomputer on every cadet's desk and connected them to all academic computing facilities via a large local area network. He assumed his present position in April 1987. His military decorations and awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, and Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters.
