BRIGADIER GENERAL LLEWELLYN O. RYAN Llewellyn Owen Ryan was born in 1905 in Elk Point, S.D., where he graduated from high school in 1923. He received his bachelor of arts degree in business administration from the University of South Dakota in 1928 and was appointed a flying cadet in October 1928. After graduating from primary and advanced flying schools, General Ryan was rated a pilot and commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Reserve on Oct. 12, 1929. He received his Regular commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Corps Jan. 6, 1930, and was assigned with the 17th pursuit Squadron at Selfridge Field, Mich. In September 1933 General Ryan entered the Air Corps Technical School at Chanute Field, Ill., graduated the following July and joined the Sixth Pursuit Squadron at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. In December 1936 he was assigned to the First Pursuit Group at Selfridge Field, Mich., as commandant of a cadet detachment and in January 1937 was named adjutant of the headquarters and headquarters squadron. In July 1938 he became assistant transportation officer at that station and a year later was appointed supervisor of the Air Corps Training Detachment at the Civilian Mechanics School at Chicago. General Ryan was designated assistant chief of staff for operations of the Air Corps Technical Training Command at Tulsa, Okla., in October 1941, and the following June moved in that capacity to Knollwood Field, N.C. In March 1944 he was transferred to Army Air Corps headquarters as chief of the Technical Training Division and a year later was named deputy assistant chief of staff for training. In May 1945 General Ryan went to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for duty with the Joint Brazil-United States Military Commission, of which he was named chief of the operations and training section two months later. General Ryan was assigned staff duty in the Operations and Training Division of the War Department General Staff in January 1947. The following December he was named chief of the troop basis branch in the Directorate of Training and Requirements at Air Force headquarters. He entered the National War College in August 1950 and graduated in June 1951. In September 1951 General Ryan became deputy for comptroller of the Far East Air Forces, with headquarters at Tokyo, Japan. Transferring to Air Force headquarters in July 1954, General Ryan was named director of statistical services in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Comptroller. General Ryan has been awarded the Legion of Merit and Army Commendation Ribbon. He is rated a command pilot, aircraft observer and technical observer. (Up to date as of July 1954)
