MAJOR GENERAL MALCOLM E. RYAN JR. Major General Malcolm E. Ryan Jr. is vice commander of 12th Air Force, Bergstrom Air Force Base, Texas. General Ryan was born in 1927, in Pueblo, Colo. He graduated from Brawley Union High School, Brawley, Calif., in June 1945. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., in June 1950 with a bachelor of science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He earned his master of science degree in applied mathematics in 1958. He is a distinguished graduate from the Armed Forces Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. After completing pilot training at Williams Air Force Base, Ariz., in August 1951, General Ryan attended F-84 combat crew training at Luke Air Force Base, Ariz. In November 1951, during the Korean War, he went to Japan and served with the 196th Fighter-Bomber Squadron. In 1952 he was transferred to Korea where he served as a pilot with the 430th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, Far East Air Forces, and completed 90 combat missions with a total of 169 combat hours in the F-84. In April 1953 he was assigned as a ferry pilot and later as operations officer with the 1737th Ferry Squadron, Military Air Transport Service, at Dover Air Force Base, Del. In January 1955 he moved to Kelly Air Force Base, Texas, as the single engine ferry control officer with the 1708th Ferry Group. General Ryan entered the University of Colorado in September 1956 under the Air Force Institute of Technology program. From June 1958 to August 1964, he served at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado as an instructor and assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics, and later became the academic scheduling officer and class secretary. After graduation from the Armed Forces Staff College in February 1965, he attended a six-month F-100 operational training course at Luke Air Force Base, Ariz. His next assignment, in October 1965, was as operations officer in the 494th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Royal Air Force Station Lakenheath, England. In January 1967 he moved to Aviano Air Base, Italy, as deputy commander for operations, 40th Tactical Group. From December 1968 to October 1969, General Ryan served as operations staff officer and later as assistant deputy commander for operations for the 31st Tactical Fighter Wing, at Tuy Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam. He then was transferred to Headquarters 7th Air Force, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, as chief, Current Plans Division, in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations. While in the Republic of Vietnam, he flew 206 combat missions, totaling more than 357 combat hours in F-100 aircraft. He returned to the United States in July 1970 and attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C., graduating a year later. In July 1971 he became commander of the 3560th Pilot Training Wing at Webb Air Force Base, Texas. He moved to Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, in August 1972, and assumed command of the 12th Flying Training Wing. In November 1973, General Ryan was named inspector general, Tactical Air Command; Langley Air Force Base, Va., and in November 1974 was reassigned as chief of staff, TAC, a position he held until he was named deputy chief of staff, plans, TAC, in August 1975. He became commander of the U.S. Air Force Tactical Air Warfare Center on Oct. 1, 1976, and held that post until assuming his present position in July 1978. He is a command pilot. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with four oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with 15 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm. He was promoted to the grade of major general on Sept. 1, 1975, with date of rank June 1, 1973. General Ryan's hometown is Brawley, Calif. (Current as of November 1978)
