MAJOR GENERAL WALTER IRWIN MILLER Walter Irwin Miller was born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1899. He served with the Army during World War I, and then completed undergraduate work at Dartmouth College and received his master's degree in business administration from its graduate school, the Amos Tuck School of Administration and Finance, in 1923. After two years with the Catepillar Tractor Company, in 1925 General Miller joined the Commercial National Bank of Peoria, Ill., as a trust officer. In 1940 and 1941, he attended the Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. Voluntarily resuming active duty as a captain in September 1942, General Miller became executive officer of the Air Force base in Belem, Brazil, in 1943, and later, at Natal, Brazil. He was named chief of staff of the South Atlantic Division of the Air Transport Command at Natal in November 1944, and in December 1945, was assigned as an air representative on the joint Brazil-United States Military Commission at Rio de Janeiro. Reassigned to Natal the following July, the general was appointed Deputy Commander of the North Brazil Training Group. Assigned to Air Force headquarters in December 1946, General Miller served in the Program Monitoring Division of the Air Comptroller's Office. The following September he was appointed chief of the Cost Control Group there, and later became the comptroller's assistant for plans and policy. The general completed the Advance Management Program at Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration in 1950. In July 1951, he was named director of accounting at Air Force Headquarters in Washington, D.C., remaining in that position when the Directorates of Accounting and Finance were consolidated July 26, 1956, and redesignated the director of accounting and finance. He became deputy chief of staff/comptroller, U.S. Air Forces in Europe, at Wiesbaden, Germany, July 23, 1957. His decorations include the Legion of Merit and the Brazilian National Order of the Southern Cross in the Degree of Officer, and the Medal of War.INTERESTSTakes care of lawn, shrubs and flower beds around quarters.While a civilian, was very active in civic affairs.
