BRIGADIER GENERAL JOHN O. MCFALLS III Brigadier General John O. McFalls III is deputy chief of staff for operations, Headquarters Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. General McFalls was born in 1943, at Randolph Air Force Base. He graduated from Fisher Parker High School, Ottawa, Canada, in 1961 and attended the first class of the U.S. Air Force Academy's Preparatory School. He earned a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering from the academy In 1966 and a master of science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Michigan in 1967. The general completed Squadron Officer School in 1969, Armed Forces Staff College in 1980 and the Royal Air Force Air Warfare Course, England, in 1983. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant through the academy In June 1966. Upon completion of graduate school, he was assigned to Reese Air Force Base, Texas, for undergraduate pilot training and received his wings In July 1968. His first assignment was as a T-38 Talon Instructor pilot at Williams Air Force Base, Ariz. In July 1970 the general was assigned as aide to the commander, 14th Aerospace Force, Ent Air Force Base, Colo., where he also served as an instructor pilot in the T-39 Sabreliner. General McFalls completed F-4 Phantom II training at Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., In December 1973, and was assigned to the 421st Tactical Fighter Squadron, Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, where he flew the F-4E. In December 1974 he returned to the United States to serve as assistant chief for standardization and evaluation for the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., again flying the F-4E. The general in September 1976 moved to Headquarters Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va., where he served as chief, fighter assignments, for the deputy chief of staff, personnel. While there, he was selected as the U.S. Air Force Senior Personnel Manager of the Year for 1979. He entered the Armed Forces Staff College and, upon graduation in January 1980, returned to Luke Air Force Base and cockpit duty In the F-15 Eagle. There he served successively as instructor pilot, squadron operations officer for the 461st Tactical Fighter Training Squadron, and, later, as commander of the 405th Tactical Training Squadron. During this tour, he was awarded the Phoenix, Ariz., Chamber of Commerce Special Award for Community Service and was the only military representative for the prestigious Phoenix Valley Leadership program for 1982. In December 1982 the general was assigned to Cranwell Royal Air Force Station, England, where he attended the Royal Air Force Air Warfare Course as the American student representative. In June 1983 he was assigned to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as a member of the operations staff at Headquarters Allied Forces Central Europe, Brunssum, Netherlands. General McFalls was reassigned to Washington, D.C., in July 1984, as chief, Air Force liaison to the U.S. House of Representatives. From January 1987 to March 1988 he was vice commander of the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing, Langley Air Force Base. He assumed command of the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, in March 1988. Under his command the 4th TFW converted from the F-4E to the F-15E Strike Eagle and became the first combat-ready F-15E unit in the Air Force. In June 1990 General McFalls became deputy director, legislative liaison, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, Washington, D.C. He assumed his current position in May 1992. The general is a command pilot with more than 3,300 hours in the T-38, T-39, F-4, F-15 and F-15E. His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, and Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He was promoted to brigadier general Jan. 1, 1991, with same date of rank. (Current as of June 1992)
