MAJOR GENERAL JAMES E. MCADOO Major General James E. McAdoo is vice commander of the Air Force Reserve, with headquarters at Robins Air Force Base, Ga. General McAdoo was born in Meridian, Miss., in 1929. He received a bachelor of science degree in engineering from Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge in 1951. He has also completed a number of military schools, including the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., in May 1972. Entering the Air Force aviation cadet program in 1952, General, McAdoo received his pilot wings and commission as a second lieutenant in February 1953. His first operational assignment was in Japan, where he flew C-54 Skymaster aircraft into Korea, the Philippines and Southeast Asia. General McAdoo returned to the United States in November 1954 and served as an aircraft commander/instructor pilot at Dover Air Force Base, Del. He was released from active duty in February 1956. The following year, he joined the 97th Troop Carrier Squadron, U.S. Air Force Reserve, at Paine Air Force Base, Wash., flying C-46 and C-119 aircraft. In 1959 General McAdoo transferred his Reserve affiliation to the 730th Troop Carrier Squadron, Long Beach, Calif. Five years later, after the 730th moved to March Air Force Base, Calif., he entered the Air Reserve technician program as the unit's assistant operations officer. He later served as the 730th's operations officer and as the operations and training officer for the 943d Military Airlift Group. He was then appointed director of operations, 452d Military Airlift Wing. In April 1969, General McAdoo transferred to the newly formed 944th MAG (Associate), Norton Air Force Base, Calif., where he assumed command of the 729th Military Airlift Squadron. In this assignment he flew the C-141 Starlifter. In October 1970 he returned to March Air Force Base as commander of the 303d Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, a unit equipped with the RC-97 Stratocruiser. In May 1972 General McAdoo was appointed commander, 932d Aeromedical Airlift Group (Associate), Scott Air Force Base, Ill., where he flew the C-9A Nightingale. When he was selected vice commander of the 403rd Tactical Airlift Wing in June 1973, he moved to Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich., flying C-130 aircraft. In May 1974 General McAdoo assumed command of the 514th MAW (Associate) at McGuire Air Force Base, N.J. Under his command, two units, the 932d AAG (Associate) and the 514th MAW (Associate), have been recipients of the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. On Dec. 1, 1976, General McAdoo was recalled to extended active duty and assigned as deputy chief of Air Force Reserve, Headquarters U.S. Air Force. He was promoted to major general Jan. 22, 1981 and assumed his present duties in December 1982. He is a command pilot with more than 7,500 flying hours. His military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service medal, Defense Superior Service medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with two oak leaf clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with hourglass device, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, and Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm.
