MAJOR GENERAL WILLIAM J. GROVE JR. Major General William J. Grove Jr. is commander of the U.S. Logistics Group, Ankara Air Station, Turkey. General Grove was born in 1937, in Frederick, Md., and graduated from St. John's High School in 1954. He received a bachelor of arts degree in economics in 1958 from Colgate University and a master's degree in business administration in 1972 from Auburn University. The general completed Squadron Officer School in 1966, Air Command and Staff College in 1972, and the National War College in 1976. The general was commissioned as a distinguished graduate of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Colgate University and entered primary pilot training in August 1958 at Moore Air Base, Texas. He subsequently trained in T-33s at Craig Air Force Base, Ala., and in F-86s at Moody Air Force Base, Ga. After completing B-52 combat crew training at Castle Air Force Base, Calif., in August 1960, he was assigned to the 23rd Bombardment Squadron, 5th Bombardment Wing, Travis Air Force Base, Calif., as a B-52 co-pilot. In April 1962 he transferred to the 60th Bombardment Squadron, 72nd Bombardment Wing, Ramey Air Force Base, Puerto Rico, where he continued flying as a B-52 co-pilot. In April 1965 General Grove returned to the United States as assistant professor of aerospace studies at Fordham University, New York City. In July 1967 he entered F-4 training at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., and upon completion in April 1968, was assigned to the 389th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 366th Tactical Fighter Wing, Da Nang Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, as an F-4 pilot. In March 1969 General Grove was assigned to the 23rd Bombardment Squadron, 5th Bombardment Wing, Minot Air Force Base, N.D., as a B-52 standardization evaluator. After graduating from Air Command and Staff College in July 1972, he transferred to the Air Force Inspection and Safety Center, Norton Air Force Base, Calif., where he served as an operations inspector and, later, as chief of the Inspection Plans Division. In June 1976 he graduated from the National War College and was assigned as commander of the 524th Bombardment Squadron, Wurtsmith Air Force Base, Mich. He later served as assistant deputy commander for maintenance for the 379th Bombardment Wing, also at Wurtsmith Air Force Base. In August 1978 the general was named a federal executive fellow at the Center for Advanced Study of the Brookings Institute, Washington, D.C. He became chief of the International Relations Division, Directorate of Plans, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Plans and Readiness, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., in July 1979. While there General Grove was assigned additional duty as Air Force representative to the United Nations Military Staff Committee. The general served as vice commander of the 19th Bombardment Wing, Robins Air Force Base, Ga., from March 1980 to January 1981. He then became commander of the 68th Bombardment Wing, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C. In October 1981 General Grove transferred to Castle Air Force Base as commander of the 93rd Bombardment Wing. He became commandant of Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps at Maxwell Air Force Base in June 1983. In August 1985 he was assigned as commander of Chanute Technical Training Center, Chanute Air Force Base, I11. The general became deputy chief of staff for technical training, Headquarters Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, in October 1986. He assumed his present position in May 1988. General Grove is a command pilot with more than 5,500 flying hours, including more than 500 combat hours. His military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal with "V" device, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with 13 oak leaf clusters, and Air Force Commendation Medal. He was promoted to major general June 1, 1987, with same date of rank. (Current as of September 1988)
