BRIGADIER GENERAL LAWRENCE C. CODDINGTON

Lawrence Clinton Coddington was born in Fresno, Calif., in 1908. He attended the University of California and graduated in 1931 with a bachelor of arts degree in economics.

Entering Primary Flying Training at Randolph Field, Texas, General Coddington graduated from Advanced Flying Training School at Kelly Field, Texas in October 1933 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Corps Reserve.

Assigned to March Field, Calif., on Oct. 16, 1933, General Coddington served as mess officer, adjutant and information officer for the 34th Pursuit Squadron and the 34th Attack Squadron until May 7, 1935. Going to Boeing Field, Settle, Wash., he was assigned duty as operations officer until Sep. 12, 1936.

That October the general moved to Hamilton Field, Calif., to become operations and intelligence officer for the 31st Bombardment Squadron, which later moved to Hickam Field, Hawaii. On April 1, 1939 General Coddington became commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Fifth Bomb Group at Hickam Field until January 1940 when he assumed the duties of adjutant and later operations and intelligence officer for the Fifth Bomb Group.

Remaining at Hickam Field he served as commanding officer of the 26th Bomb Squadron until August 1942 when he was transferred to New Mexico as deputy and later director of training at Hobbs Army Air Field. Moving to Roswell Army Air Field, N.M., General Coddington was assigned director of four-engine training, 314th (twin-engine) Flying Training Group, deputy for training and operations, and later deputy school and station commander.

Reassigned in September 1945 to Santa Ana, Calif., General Coddington served as commanding officer of the 3000th Army Air Forces Base Unit and later as commanding officer of Minter Field, Calif., going to Fort Leavenworth, Kan., in February 1946 to attend the Command and General Staff School. Upon graduation he was assigned duty as commander of Mather Field, Calif., remaining in that capacity until August 1947.

Going overseas to the Far East, General Coddington became a member of the advisory team, Chinese Air Force, Peiping, China and a member of the Shanghai advisory team, director of administration and base system, Joint United States Military Advisory Group, China, until Feb. 8, 1949. The general then became commander of the 528th Aircraft Control and Warning Group and later commander of the 35th Fighter Wing, Far East Command, returning to the United States on March 31, 1950 to attend the National War College, Washington, D.C.

Joining Air Force headquarters on July 1, 1951 he served as deputy assistant for air bases, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and on Jan. 1, 1952 was appointed assistant division chief, requirements and utilization in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. Remaining at headquarters, General Coddington returned to the Air Base Division as chief, later moving to the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations as executive officer.

On June 30, 1953 the general was reassigned to McConnell Air Force Base, Wichita, Kan., to act as special assistant to the wing commander, until July 16, 1954 when became commander of the base.

General Coddington's decorations include the Legion of Merit. He is rated a command pilot.
