MAJOR GENERAL ARCHIE MAURICE BURKE

Maj. Gen. Archie Maurice Burke is deputy chief of staff, operations, Aerospace Defense Command, Ent Air Force Base, Colo.

General Burke was born in Grandfield, Okla., in 1918. He graduated from Grandfield High School in 1936 and from Cameron Junior College, Lawton, Okla., in 1938. He then attended Oklahoma A&M College, Stillwater, Okla., and in 1940 entered aviation cadet training. In December 1940 he received his pilot wings and commission as a second lieutenant at Kelly Field, Texas.

From January 1941 until July 1945 General Burke served in various assignments as flying school instructor, director of training, and detachment commander at Craig and Napier fields, Ala. He next served as training command liaison officer with the Fifth Army Area in St. Louis, Mo., and Chicago, Ill. In September 1946 he returned to Oklahoma A&M College where he received his bachelor of science degree in agriculture in 1947.

In July 1947 he went to Japan where he was commander of the 80th Fighter Squadron and then the 35th Fighter Group of the Fifth Air Force. Upon his return to the United States in January 1950, he attended the Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. Following a tour of duty as senior Air Force instructor at the Ground General School, Fort Riley, Kan., from July 1950 to July 1953, General Burke was assigned as chief, Weapons Systems Branch, Technical Training Division, Deputy Chief of Staff, Plans, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.

General Burke served as chief of staff, Air Force Section of the Military Assistance Advisory Group Turkey, from August 1956 to July 1958. He returned to the United States and became deputy for operations for the Chicago Air Defense Sector, Truax Field, Wis., where he remained until July 1960. He then attended the National War College, Washington, D.C. In June 1961 he was assigned to the 29th Air Division, Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base, Mo., as deputy for operations; and in July 1962 he assumed duties as commander of the Grand Forks Air Defense Sector, Grand Forks Air Force Base, N.D.

From July 1963 to July 1965 General Burke was commander of the Sioux City Air Defense Sector, Sioux City Air Base, Iowa. He then went to Goose Air Base, Labrador, and served as Commander, 37th Air Division (ADC) and commander, 37th NORAD/CONAD Division. In January 1967 he assumed duties as vice commander of Fourteenth Air Force at Gunter Air Force Base, Ala.

General Burke was assigned as deputy chief of staff, operations, Headquarters Aerospace Defense Command, at Ent Air Force Base, Colo., in November 1967.

His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Joint Service Commendation Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal.
