Major General Theodore D. Broadwater is assistant deputy chief of staff for logistics and engineering, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.
General Broadwater was born in Isabella, Pa., in 1930. He graduated from Brownsville (Pa.) Senior High School in 1948 and then attended Greenbrier Military School, Lewisburg, W.Va., for two years. He received a bachelor of arts degree in history from the University of Pittsburgh in 1952, a master of science degree in public administration from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C., in 1964 and completed the advanced management program at the University of Pittsburgh in 1976. He graduated from the Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., in 1964 and the Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pa., in 1972.
His military career began in 1952 upon receiving a commission through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program at the University of Pittsburgh. After completing technical training General Broadwater was assigned as a supply officer in the 781st Troop Carrier Squadron at Donaldson Air Force Base, S.C. He served until February 1962 in various base and squadron supply jobs at Donaldson; Komaki Air Base, Japan; Langley Air Force Base, Va.; and Shaw Air Force Base, S.C. During his assignment with the 837th Air Base Group at Shaw, he was management and procedures officer, weapon systems manager and property accounting officer. In the summer of 1959 he became the 837th Air Base Group's detachment commander.
From March 1962 until May 1963, General Broadwater served with U.S. Air Force Security Service as base supply officer, transportation officer and food service officer at Samsun Air Station, Turkey. In June 1963 he entered the Air Command and Staff College and following graduation transferred to Kelly Air Force Base, Texas, for duty as supply officer for the Air Force Cryptologic Depot. He then served in the Pacific Security Region, Wheeler Air Force Base, Hawaii, from July 1966 until June 1969, as a logistics plans officer and as the director of logistics plans.
In July 1969 General Broadwater transferred to Air Force headquarters as the logistics program officer in the Directorate of Programs, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Programs and Resources. In September 1971 he moved to U-Tapao, Royal Thai Naval Airfield, Thailand, as commander of the 635th Supply Squadron and chief of supply for the base. He served additionally as the Air Force liaison officer with the Royal Thai Air Force during the 1972 basing buildup in Thailand.
Following graduation from the Army War College in July 1973, he returned to Air Force headquarters as chief of the Other Procurement Division in the Directorate of Logistics Plans and Programs. In August 1974 he was selected as deputy director of the Logistics Plans and Programs Directorate. In February 1977 he returned to Kelly Air Force Base as vice commander of the San Antonio Air Logistics Center. From May 1979 until March 1980, General Broadwater was director of supply operations for the Defense Logistics Agency with headquarters at Cameron Station, Alexandria, Va. He then returned to Air Force headquarters as director of logistics plans and programs in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Logistics and Engineering. He assumed his present duties in October 1982.
His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award ribbon with oak leaf cluster.
He was promoted to major general Jan. 22, 1981, with date of rank Aug. 1, 1977.
